Around our house, we tend to add "-y" or "'-ies" to shorten words. I'm not sure how it started, but we regularly talk about having "poppy" while watching a movie, or opening prezzies on Christmas. That's a side note to explain the title.
This year, for my New Year's resolutions, I wanted to pick some things that I really want/need to change, but that are fairly realistic and measurable. It's good to declare such goals, because then you can either celebrate as they're met, or fess up when they're not. So here goes, my New Year's Rezzies:
1. Stop picking my cuticles. This is habit that goes waaaayyy back, like to when I was a kid. It's basically my version of biting my fingernails. This is a tough goal, not only because I've been doing it for decades but because it's such a mindless habit that is so subconscious that I may as well set a goal of breathing on an 8-count or dreaming cooler dreams. Still, my goal is to STOP, especially now that Addison imitates pretty much everything I do, and a toddler picking her cuticles isn't cute. If I can make it to February 1 with pick-free fingers (as in, they are totally healthy by then, not that I didn't have a couple slip ups before then) I am treating myself to a manicure. I've already been working on this one for a couple weeks, and am doing fairly well, though sadly had a moment of subconscious weakness TODAY. Onward.
2. Don't run as much. I know most people are setting goals to actually run, but it really is a challenge for me to scale back. I love to run, and I'm a 6-day-a-week girl. However, especially during the winter with a kid (even thanks to all our cold gear), it's a healthy goal for me to run less. The specifics of this one are to run just 4 days a week, and fill in the other 2 days with strength/cross training, keeping Sunday as a rest day. I hope it'll be good for me to mix it up a bit, and also good for my joints/IT band/skeletal structure to cut back on the pavement pounding. Sigh...
3. Get up before Addison. Specifically, to spend time in Bible study and prayer. Back when she was taking 2 naps a day, it was easier to fit this in during her morning naptime. Now that we're officially down to only one nap, I haven't been as successful having quality time in the word along with the other stuff that I "need" to do during naptime. The blessing of just 1 nap a day is that she almost always sleeps til nearly 8 now, so there is NO reason I can't get up (long) before her. I mean, I used to get up at FIVE when I was teaching. I can do this one.
4. No 'Zerts January. Is it a NY Resolution if it's only for one month? Well I'm making it one. I started this one a couple days after Christmas and plan to pass on all desserts until February. This isn't for weight loss or anything, just for general healthfulness and also (gasp) learning a little more self-discipline, which is never a bad thing. Danny's joining me for this one, and in full disclosure, we will be eating small bites of dark chocolate and still take sugar in our coffee. We're not hardcore. :)
What are your goals and resolutions? I loved the reminder sent out to our church listserv, which is that our hope is not in a new year, but in the One who makes all things new.
He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.” Rev. 21:5
1) i'm jealous of addison's wake-up time! david woke up once at 8am last week and tom and i were like YEAH! guess he wakes up at 8 now! we're fools. he's back to 6:45....
ReplyDelete2) hope the no desserts goes well! i did that one month last year and i told someone about it. she said, "yeah, i'm giving up sugar for a month, too. but i'm still eating bread." i was floored. talk about WAY more hardcore than me!!
Loving all the blog posts. I promise I have been reading just not commenting. Computer issues and I tend to read things on the fly. Sorry. I know how nice it is to get comments on your blog when you take the time to write them.
